Happy Lunar New Year 2015, Year Of The Sheep!

Falling on the 19th of February this year, this 15 day festival holds traditions and rituals that have remained the same throughout generations. It marks a time to reunite with family during the New Year's Eve dinner and celebrate the coming of the New Year with fireworks; whilst houses and shop fronts don red decorations and locals parade the streets in cities and towns around the world.

This year marks the year of the sheep. The sheep is the 8th sign of the Chinese Zodiac and as the number 8 is considered particularly lucky in Chinese culture, so are people born in the sign of the Sheep. People born in the Year of the Sheep are considered to be calm, gentle and creative.

Food has remained a large focal point in the celebrations of the New Year. Various dishes are served during this festive time, each holding a different meaning for the New Year. There are many superstitious foods commonly eaten during this festive time, including: noodles, whole chicken, whole fish, dumplings, oysters, sesame balls, rice cakes, oranges and tangerines.

During your New Year preparations, why not try out Aromatic Grilled Orange Chicken recipe using some ingredients that'll be sure to bring you luck and good fortune in the coming year:

Ingredients 

  • 1 packet Asian Home Gourmet Thai Aromatic Grill Marinade (Kai Yang) SpicePaste
  • 1.2 kg (2½ lb) chicken drumlets
  • 1 orange, zest and juice
  • 2 tsp orange marmalade (optional)

Method

  1. Marinate drumlets with Mariande, orange zest, orange juice and marmalade for 1 hour.
  2. Grill drumlets on a preheated grill for about 15 minutes or until cooked.  Brush drumlets with the remaining marinade and turn occasionally.
  3. Serve warm with salad, rice or noodles.

Variations

  • You may pan-fry the drumlets instead of grilling.
  • You may replace chicken with pork ribs or rack of lamb.  Adjust cooking time accordingly.

Cooking Tips

  • You may thicken remaining marinade with 1-2 teaspoon of cornflour (cornstarch) in a small saucepot and pour over drumlets.
  • For more flavourful meat, marinade overnight.
